Dofus Arena in 2026: What Happened to It and Where to Find Its Tactical Duels
A coach, a team bought with 6,000 kamas, turn-based fights ranked with Elo. Dofus Arena closed in 2014, but its players never forgot it. Here is what it was, where the fan-made revival stands, and where to find its tactical duels today.

Dofus Arena has not existed since October 14, 2014, when Ankama shut its servers down. Yet it comes back now and then thanks to Arena Returns, a fan-made recreation tolerated by Ankama that opens in beta phases: the latest one started on August 24, 2025, and the next one has no date yet. In the meantime, several games carry its spirit, from the Dofus Kolossium to tactical duels you can play in a browser.
What Dofus Arena was
Dofus Arena is a game by Ankama, the studio behind Dofus, built entirely around player-versus-player combat. No world to explore, no quests, no experience: only turn-based tactical fights in arenas.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 2006 | Closed beta, then open beta from February; “beta 2” arrives in July |
| August 2006 | The Dofus-Arena League, a tournament league, is announced |
| June 21, 2010 | Official release, according to JeuxOnline |
| February 2011 | The game becomes “Arena”, with a free expansion, Confrontation |
| February 2012 | Development paused: the game is “not profitable enough” |
| October 14, 2014 | Servers shut down for good |
The game was free to play, funded by in-game purchases, on Windows, Mac and Linux. When the pause was announced in 2012, its lead game designer explained that revenue “barely” paid for the team; at the shutdown, Ankama pointed players to Krosmaster Arena.
A coach, a team, a budget: Dofus Arena team builds
In Dofus Arena, you did not play one character: you were the coach of a team. Before the fight, you built it with a fixed budget of 6,000 kamas, which had to cover the characters, their spells and their equipment. A team had 2 to 6 fighters, most often 4 or 5.
That is where much of the game happened: the team build. Six weak fighters or four well-equipped ones? A healer, or one more hitter? Since there was no experience to earn, a newcomer could field exactly the same team as a veteran: only the build and the way you played it made the difference.
The fights
Fights were 1v1 or 2v2, on fixed maps. Each character acted according to its initiative, which depended on its class and gear, and had 30 seconds to play. Hitting an enemy from the side or from behind dealt more damage than from the front. Bonus cards, usable once, and event cards, drawn every turn, changed how a match unfolded. Most fights were ranked: a ladder based on the Elo system ranked the coaches, and every fight could be replayed.
The classes were those of Dofus at the time: twelve, with ten spells each (French Wikipedia counts thirteen, with a fourteenth, the Masqueraider, only tested in beta). Among them was the Iop, the melee warrior who hits hard up close, and the Cra, the archer who keeps opponents at a distance.
There was also the Sram, the assassin of traps and invisibility, and the Xelor, a control specialist who slows and moves opponents, along with the Feca, the Eniripsa, the Sacrier, the Ecaflip and the rest. On a 6,000-kama budget, every class you added to the team kept another one out.
Why players miss Dofus Arena
Twelve years after it closed, Dofus Arena still has enough loyal fans for a team of them to rebuild it. What set it apart explains that nostalgia.
- PvP without the grind. No level to raise, no gear to farm: you launched the game and fought on equal terms.
- The joy of the team build. Building a team under a budget, testing it, fixing it: a game within the game, close to building a deck in a card game.
- A competitive scene. Elo ladder, replays, tournaments rewarded in Kroz, the game’s currency: Dofus Arena had the ingredients of what we would call esports today.
Its flaws were known too. The game was seen as complex for beginners and had little visibility, and Gamosaurus believes its business model drifted toward pay-to-win near the end.
Not to be confused: Dofus Arena is also a manga (a French “manfra”), published by Ankama Éditions from 2007, written by Nicolas Devos and drawn by Jérôme Bretzner. It follows Pym, a Sacrier, but it is not the game.
Arena Returns: where does the Dofus Arena comeback stand? (next beta)
Arena Returns is a fan project recreating Dofus Arena in its last version, “Arena Confrontation”. Its site calls it “a faithful recreation by fans, for fans” and an unofficial server, tolerated by Ankama.
- October 2022: first public test of an alpha, still without fights. At the end of October, Ankama allows the project to continue, on condition that it is not monetized.
- August 24, 2025: a beta opens at 4 p.m. (Paris time), announced by JeuxOnline, with a launcher to download from the site.
- October 23, 2026: the site shows “Next beta soon!”, with no date. It claims more than 4,500 registered players, more than 2,800 Discord members and more than 39,000 fights played.
To play, you create a free account on arenareturns.com and install the launcher, available for Windows and Linux (macOS is announced). The project’s Discord is the best place to hear about the next beta date.
So Arena Returns is the answer to “can you still play Dofus Arena?”: yes, during betas, with the real game. Between betas, you wait. It is a volunteer project, and its future depends on Ankama’s tolerance.
What to play in the meantime: games in the spirit of Dofus Arena
| Game | Format | PvP | Price | Platform | Available today | Stakes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dofus Arena (2010) | Team of 2 to 6 characters, 1v1 and 2v2 | Yes, Elo ladder | Free, in-game purchases | PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) | No: closed on October 14, 2014 | No |
| Arena Returns | Fan-made recreation of Dofus Arena | Yes | Free | Launcher for Windows and Linux | During betas; next one undated | No |
| Kolossium (Dofus 3) | One character, 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 | Yes, rating and leagues | Dofus subscription (€5.99 a month) | PC (client) | Yes | No |
| Krosmaster Arena | Miniatures board game, 2 players or 2 teams | Yes | Boxed game; online, Premium figurines with a Board Game Arena membership | Tabletop; Board Game Arena | Boxed; the online version dates from 2018, check before you go | No |
| Solwaris | One hero per player, 1v1 or 2 vs 2 | Yes, leagues and an Elo rating per class | Free, no subscription | Browser (computer and phone) | Yes | Optional: 1, 5 or 10 USDC |
The Kolossium is today’s official ranked PvP in Dofus, with 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 queues and a rating per mode. But it needs a character of at least level 20, levelled and geared: the opposite of Dofus Arena’s equal start. We explain how it works in our Dofus Kolossium guide, and how strong each class is in our Dofus class tier list.
Krosmaster Arena, where Ankama sent players at the shutdown, turns the universe into a board game: miniatures, an arena full of obstacles, two players. It is a tabletop game, with a Board Game Arena adaptation announced in 2018.

Solwaris, the heir to Dofus Arena

Solwaris, our game, is a tactical duel in the spirit of Dofus Arena: turn-based PvP and nothing else. It opens in a browser, with no download and no subscription, and you can play it today, without waiting for a beta.
- On equal terms, as in Dofus Arena. No levels, no gear: two players of the same class have exactly the same tools from the first fight.
- 12 AP and 6 MP per turn, 40 seconds to play, lines of sight, pushes, invisible traps and AP removal.
- 6 classes inspired by Dofus: the Warrior recalls the Iop, the Arcanist the Cra, the Shade the Sram, the Clockmaker the Xelor.
- A ranking: leagues from Novice to Legend, with a separate Elo rating for each class, and an initiative auction before the first turn.
- 1v1 and 2 vs 2, like Dofus Arena’s two formats.
- Optional staked servers: both players stake 1, 5 or 10 USDC, and the winner takes the pot minus a 12.5% fee, so 17.50 USDC on a 10 USDC duel. A lost stake is lost. Everything else in the game is free.
WarriorMelee · Assault / Guardian
ArcanistRanged · Assault / Heal
ShadeMid-range · Traps / Chance
ClockmakerMid-range · Control / Assault
What is missing, to be honest: you play a single hero, not a coach’s team. There is no 6,000-kama build, no event cards, and 6 classes instead of twelve. And the community is small: at off-peak hours, the queue can stay empty for a while; training against the AI, outside the rankings, fills the wait. The full rules are in the Solwaris guide, and stakes are explained on the economy page.

Frequently asked questions
Does Dofus Arena still exist?
No. Ankama paused its development in February 2012 and shut its servers down on October 14, 2014. The only way to play it again is Arena Returns, a fan-made, unofficial recreation tolerated by Ankama, which opens in beta phases.
How can I play Dofus Arena again?
Follow Arena Returns on arenareturns.com and its Discord. You create a free account and download a launcher for Windows or Linux (macOS is announced). The game only opens during betas, and the next one had no date as of October 23, 2026.
Is there a game like Dofus Arena?
The Dofus Kolossium keeps ranked PvP, but needs a levelled, geared character. Krosmaster Arena brings the universe to a miniatures board game. Solwaris, inspired by Dofus Arena, offers turn-based tactical duels in the browser, with no levels or gear, playable right now.
Will there be a Dofus Arena 2?
We found no announcement from Ankama as of October 23, 2026. The return of Dofus Arena currently goes through Arena Returns, a fan project. Back in 2006, “Dofus Arena 2” simply meant the second version of the game’s beta.
