Games Like Wakfu and Waven: 10 Turn-Based Tactics Alternatives

Wakfu blends a political MMORPG with tactical combat where facing matters; Waven condenses the Ankama universe into short matches. Here are the games that capture one or the other, from the same studio or elsewhere, free or paid.

Wakfu is a special case. It is an MMORPG where players elect governors and manage the ecosystem, but also a demanding tactical combat game: every character has a facing, and hitting from the side or from behind changes the damage. Waven, its younger sibling, went the other way: keep the Ankama universe, but in short matches.

So looking for games like Wakfu starts with knowing what you want to find again. This selection covers all three cases: the Ankama world, tactical combat, and short PvP.

What makes Wakfu unique

Before comparing, here is what sets Wakfu’s combat apart:

6 AP and 3 MP base, which do not carry over from turn to turn, plus Wakfu Points (WP), a third resource that does not refill at the start of the turn;
facing: attacking from the side adds damage, from behind even more, and both tackle and dodge depend on it;
timed turns (30 seconds to act) and a placement phase before each fight;
18 classes, a Heroes mode to play several characters solo, and a world partly run by players.

No other game brings all of this together. Each of the games below takes part of it.

In the Ankama universe

Dofus

The big brother, released in 2004, set a thousand years before Wakfu. You find the grid, AP and MP, and classes that often share the same names. But combat is different: no side or back damage bonus as in Wakfu, no Wakfu Points, different range rules. The model differs too: the free account is limited to Incarnam and Astrub, and the rest requires a subscription (details in is Dofus free?). Since Dofus 3 launched on Unity on 3 December 2024, the game has a new engine and nineteen classes.

Dofus Touch

The mobile version of Dofus is free, with in-app purchases. It was relaunched on 3 April 2024 with new servers. It is the simplest option for a Wakfu player who wants to try Dofus without a subscription.

Waven

Waven is Ankama’s short-format bet: fast tactical fights, the Ankama universe, and a free model where, according to its developers, all content is accessible without paying. In early access since August 2023, it was heavily reworked in 2025: 16-card decks, gear removed, and a progression reset planned for version 1.0. Ankama was aiming for December 2025, “or even” 2026; we found no confirmation that this 1.0 had shipped at the time of writing.

Krosmaga

Ankama’s tactical card game is free, but no longer updated, and its mobile version closed in 2024. Best left to those curious about the universe.

The great tactics games outside Ankama

Divinity: Original Sin 2

If what you love in Wakfu is interacting with the terrain, Larian’s RPG (2017) is the benchmark. Its combat relies on action points: 4 per turn, up to 6, and the ones you do not spend carry over. Fire, oil and poison surfaces transform the battlefield. Solo or co-op.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre

Two classics of the grid tactical RPG, both back recently: Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on 30 September 2025, Tactics Ogre: Reborn in November 2022. Classes to combine, long campaigns, no PvP. For the Wakfu player who enjoys building characters.

Wargroove

A turn-based tactics game (2019), with multiplayer for 2 to 4 players, playable asynchronously and cross-platform. No Wakfu-style classes, but real tactical depth. The spirit of Waven, in a more classic form.

Into the Breach

Tiny grids, enemies that telegraph their attacks, and turns that feel like positioning and push puzzles. Solo and paid, but perfect if you love short fights where every tile counts.

XCOM 2 and Fire Emblem

XCOM 2 (2016) offers a rare online 1v1 mode in a cover-based tactics game. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, released on 17 September 2026 on Switch 2, is Nintendo’s latest big tactical campaign, single-player.

Solwaris: tactical combat, in the browser

Solwaris is our game, and it does not claim to replace Wakfu: no world, no politics, no professions. It is a turn-based 1v1 tactical duel, in 3D, that opens in a tab with no download; a free wallet is all you need to sign up. What it keeps is the combat:

12 AP and 6 MP per turn, never carried over (the Arcanist has 14 AP, the Clockmaker 5 MP);
spells with range, cost, line of sight and cooldowns;
pushes into walls, position swaps, AP and MP removal, invisible traps;
turns of 40 seconds at most and fights with no turn limit, until there is a winner: usually matches of a few minutes, in the spirit of Waven.

There is no facing as in Wakfu. On the other hand, each of the 6 classes has a passive that bends a rule: the Brute hits harder the more wounded it is, the Clockmaker regains AP on every position swap, the Arcanist hits harder from afar.

PvP is ranked in leagues, with an Elo rating per class; you can also train against the AI, watch fights as a spectator or play 2 vs 2. The game is young and its community small: at off-peak hours the queue can stay empty for a while, and training against the AI, outside the leagues and with no effect on your rating, fills the wait.

The Ankama world and the MMORPG: Dofus, or Dofus Touch to start for free.
The universe in a short format: Waven, keeping an eye on the state of its overhaul.
Combat that plays with the terrain: Divinity: Original Sin 2.
