Dofus Private Server PvP: The Real Risks, and the Official Alternatives

Max level on arrival, free gear, PvP at any hour: it is easy to see the appeal of Dofus private servers. Here is what they really involve, for your accounts and your data, and the official ways to get the same thing.

Search for “Dofus private server PvP” and you will find tempting promises: a max-level character from creation, full gear handed out, tournaments every evening, often on the 1.29 version many players miss. For someone who only enjoys PvP, the idea makes sense: skip months of farming and go straight to the fighting.

We will not give any links to these servers. Instead, here is what they involve, with sources, and how to get most of what they promise through official channels.

Why private servers attract PvP players

Let us be fair: private servers answer real wishes.

  • PvP without the preparation. On official servers, a competitive character takes weeks of levelling and gearing.
  • Nostalgia. Many of these servers run old versions of the game.
  • Free play. The official free account is still limited to Incarnam, Astrub and the areas around them, with no faction PvP; the rest requires a subscription.

Understanding these wishes also tells you what to look for elsewhere. But first, the risks.

What Ankama’s rules say

Ankama’s general terms of use, which apply to its games, are very clear. In their August 2023 version, as reproduced for Wakfu on Steam:

ArticleWhat it forbids
5.2.3Using or creating pirate servers, proxies, VPNs, emulators or anything similar to connect to the games
5.2.1 and 5.2.2Decompiling, disassembling, modifying or altering the clients or the games
5.2.5Creating, using or promoting bots, cheating, automation or modification software, auto-clickers
4.3.1Lending, sharing, trading, buying, selling or transferring an account
10.2Graduated sanctions, up to permanent suspension

The text targets first those who create and run these servers, but article 5.2.3 also mentions using them. Ankama has in fact published a news post titled (in French) “Ankama fights private servers”, in which the studio points out that its game supports more than a hundred employees and defends equality between players.

This is not theoretical. In November 2011, a court in Lille, France, sentenced the administrator and a moderator of the Kay Paradize private server to 18 months and 8 months of suspended prison time, and ordered them to pay Ankama about 250,000 euros in damages. The server charged a one-euro monthly subscription and sold items; it reportedly gathered around 30,000 players and took in more than 250,000 euros since 2010.

The most concrete risk: your accounts and your data

For a player, the most immediate danger is not a courtroom. It is security.

A private server is run by strangers, who see everything you hand them. In 2020, the French site Millenium listed the risks: resale of login details, hacking, sharing of personal data, spyware. The site recalled a 2017 episode: a server administrator had taken the player database and tested their credentials on the official servers, to steal accounts.

Three habits follow, whatever you decide:

  1. Never reuse your Ankama password, or your main email address, on an unofficial service.
  2. Be wary of modified clients: an executable downloaded outside official channels can contain anything.
  3. If you have already entered your Ankama credentials elsewhere, change your official password right away.

And longevity

Even without bad intent, a private server can close overnight. Millenium described frequent closures and openings, with no guarantee of backups: the character you built can disappear along with it.

In Dofus

The Kolossium is open from level 20, and since December 2023, levels 20 to 199 and level 200 have separate queues: so you can play ranked PvP well before the end of progression. Duels let you practise with friends without losing anything. We cover these modes in our article on Dofus PvP and in our guide to the Kolossium.

For nostalgia, Dofus Retro is the official 1.29 version, run by Ankama, on subscription. And to play without paying, Dofus Touch is free on mobile, with its own Kolossium. Our article on playing Dofus for free details what each offer allows.

One special case: Dofus Arena, Ankama’s PvP game that closed in 2014, lives again through Arena Returns, an unofficial server rebuilt by fans and tolerated by Ankama, which opens in beta phases. We tell its story and its comeback in our article on Dofus Arena.

Outside Dofus: PvP without farming

A Solwaris duel between two Shades on the Low Ruins, with rows of trap tiles laid around the player
In Solwaris (not Dofus): two Shades, traps invisible to the opponent, and no gear to farm.

What most PvP private servers promise is, at heart, combat without progression. That is exactly the principle behind Solwaris, our game: a turn-based 1v1 tactical duel, free, playable in the browser with no download, and a free wallet is all you need to sign up. Nothing to install, so no dubious client.

  • No levels, no gear: everyone starts with their class’s full toolkit, from the very first fight.
  • 12 AP and 6 MP per turn, line of sight, pushes, AP and MP removal, invisible traps.
  • 6 classes, some of which recall Dofus: the Shade traps like a Sram, the Clockmaker removes AP like a Xelor, the Artificer mines the ground like a Rogue.
  • Ranked leagues, with an Elo rating per class, and an initiative bid to decide who plays first.

Its limits are real: it is not Dofus, with no world, no quests and no nineteen classes. And the game is young: at off-peak hours the queue can stay empty for a while, and training against the AI, outside the leagues and with no effect on your rating, fills the wait.

In short

Wanting instant PvP is legitimate, and it says a lot about what many players are after: the combat, without weeks of preparation. But the answer is not a server when you do not know who runs it, what it does with your credentials or how long it will stay online.

A Dofus PvP private server breaks Ankama’s rules, exposes your credentials to strangers and can vanish along with your character. If you want Dofus PvP, official routes exist, from the Kolossium to Dofus Retro. If what you mostly want is combat without the farming, pick a game designed for it rather than an unauthorised copy.

Dofus, Dofus Retro, Dofus Touch and Wakfu are trademarks of Ankama. Solwaris is an independent game, not affiliated with Ankama.

Frequently asked questions

Are Dofus private servers allowed?

No. Ankama’s terms of use forbid creating or using pirate servers, emulators or proxies to connect to its games. In 2011, the people running a Dofus private server received suspended prison sentences and were ordered to pay about 250,000 euros in damages.

Can you get banned for playing on a Dofus private server?

Ankama’s terms of use provide for sanctions up to permanent suspension, which can cover one game or all of its services. The most concrete risk, though, is account theft if you reuse your official login details.

How can you do PvP in Dofus without farming?

There is no official shortcut in Dofus. Duels let you practise with nothing at stake, and the Kolossium opens from level 20. If you only want the combat, a game like Solwaris offers tactical duels with no levels or gear, free in the browser.

Is there an official version of Dofus 1.29?

Yes, Dofus Retro, run by Ankama. It requires a Dofus subscription.
