Is Axie Infinity Dead? Its 2026 Status, and the Best Alternatives by What You Liked

Is Axie Infinity dead? Not quite. But if you last played in 2021, when scholarships were everywhere and SLP was worth real money, the Axie of 2026 would be hard to recognise. This article does two things. First, it lays out Axie’s actual status in 2026, with sources. Then it suggests Axie Infinity alternatives sorted by what you enjoyed: the creatures, the card combat, the tactics, or simply playing for free.

Axie Infinity in 2026: what is actually happening

Here are the facts, from Sky Mavis’s own announcements and the press that covered them.

SLP rewards stopped. On January 7, 2026, Sky Mavis ended SLP rewards in Axie Origins’ ranked mode. According to BitPinas, the studio judged that SLP extraction at that scale, largely by bots at the higher ranks, was harming the ecosystem. SLP can still be spent on crafting and on morphing Axies, but it is no longer the reward for ranked play.

Origins keeps going, with a different reward. Axie Origins still runs seasons. Season 18 ran from July 8 to September 2, 2026, with 80,000 bAXS shared among the top 2,000 players. bAXS is a “bonded” AXS: backed by AXS, but not transferable between accounts. It can be spent on breeding, ascending, evolving and staking. That is a deliberate change: rewards are meant to stay in the ecosystem rather than be sold.

Classic goes to the community. Axie Classic, the original version, held its last competitive season under Sky Mavis in 2026. The studio announced a pause of competitive seasons and active development after Season 16, and a handover to a community committee. In mid-September it said the remaining step was the legal groundwork to transfer the IP and infrastructure.

The future is an MMO. Sky Mavis’s main project is Atia’s Legacy, an MMO set in Lunacia with squad-based combat. It has been in development since 2024. Playtest 3, in July 2026, added real-time 8-player PvP on PC, iOS and Android. No release date had been announced when we wrote this.

So, is it dead? No. It is a smaller game with a changed economy and a studio betting on a new title. What is gone is the 2021 promise: play daily, earn a token, sell it. Axie itself has been dismantling that model since 2022, when its team admitted SLP was being minted several times faster than it was burned.

Why players leave, and what they want instead

People who search for Axie alternatives usually want one of four things:

1. Creature collecting and battling, the heart of Axie.
2. The card-based combat: Axie’s fights are played with cards drawn from your creatures’ parts.
3. The tactics: reading an opponent, planning turns, positioning.
4. A game that does not require buying anything, after the NFT entry costs of 2021.

Below, each group gets its own suggestions. All facts were checked in September 2026. Where a game involves tokens or NFTs, we say so.

If you liked the creatures

Illuvium: Arena. An 8-player autobattler with collectible creatures called Illuvials, on PC through the Epic Games Store. The studio describes it as completely free to play, with the full roster available without NFTs; owned NFT Illuvials add cosmetic upgrades and an edge in one mode, Leviathan. It was still receiving updates in September 2026.

Amiko Legends (formerly Seekers of Tokane, by Aurory, on Solana). A creature collector with turn-based combat, renamed in October 2025, when it was described as free-to-play with weekly rewards in the AURY token and no NFT required. Its official site now presents it as an “extraction creature collector”, with a Steam page and no release date yet: check its current state before investing time.

Pokémon Showdown, if you want creature battles without any crypto. It is a free, open-source Pokémon battle simulator that runs in a browser, with random teams or teams you build.

If you liked the card combat

Gods Unchained. A free-to-play trading card game playable in the browser, where the cards are tradable NFTs on Immutable’s network. It released an expansion in June 2026. You can play without buying anything; cards and the GODS token are there if you want to trade.

Splinterlands. A card battler on the Hive blockchain, still updated in 2026. Ranked play requires a paid Spellbook, but a Frontier mode is playable without buying anything. Rewards come in the SPS token, released on a declining schedule.

If you liked the tactics

Solwaris is a 1v1 turn-based tactics game played in the browser. There are no creatures to collect: you pick one of 6 classes, each with its own spells, and face another player on a tiled arena. Every turn you spend 12 action points and 6 movement points; range, line of sight, pushes and traps decide the outcome, and the only randomness is critical hits at 10%.

What an Axie player will notice:

• Free, with no wallet. The full game, ranked leagues with an Elo rating per class, AI training and spectating need nothing but a browser.
• No token and no NFT. Nothing to breed, nothing to resell, and nothing you buy changes a match.
• Optional stakes. On dedicated servers, two players can stake 1, 5 or 10 USDC each; the winner takes the pot minus a 12.5% fee (17.50 USDC on a 10 USDC duel). The loser loses the stake. It is a way to compete for real stakes when you are confident in your level, not income.
• Its limits. It is a young game with a small community, so you may wait for opponents at quiet hours, and real-money duels are restricted in some countries.

Axie Infinity in 2026 is alive but diminished: Origins seasons continue with non-transferable rewards, Classic is passing to its community, and the studio’s future depends on Atia’s Legacy.
