Is Dofus Free in 2026? What You Can Really Do Without Paying, and Free Games Like Dofus

“Is Dofus free?” The question keeps coming up, and the answer depends on which Ankama game you mean. Dofus on PC is still a subscription game with a free front door. Dofus Touch, Wakfu and Waven work differently. And outside Ankama, a few tactics games have nothing to sell you in order to play.

This article sets out, game by game, what is really free in 2026.

The summary: who is free, and how far

Dofus on PC: a free trial more than a free game

The free Dofus account gives access to the starting area of Incarnam, the city of Astrub and most of its surroundings. That is enough to discover the combat system, create a character, learn your first spells and gain a few levels.

But it is a ceiling, not a step. Without a subscription, there is no access to the other cities, no faction PvP, and professions are capped at level 30. Since Dofus 3 launched on 3 December 2024, the subscription costs €5.99 a month; a 7-day plan exists at €3, and longer plans work out cheaper per month.

Subscribing with kamas

Dofus has a feature players know well: you can pay for your subscription in ogrines, the premium currency, and those ogrines can be bought with kamas from other players, through an in-game exchange. A regular player can therefore, in theory, fund their subscription with playing time.

Two caveats:

• since November 2024, to fight bots, access to this kama exchange requires at least one real-money purchase on the account, except for accounts created before 1 January 2023;
• the exchange rate varies by server and supply: kamas spent on the subscription are kamas you no longer have for gear.

In other words: “free Dofus” exists, but you have to produce enough kamas to fund it, which stays slow as long as you are limited to the free areas.

Dofus Retro

Version 1.29, the original one, has no free mode: it requires a Dofus subscription.

Dofus Touch: free Dofus on mobile

On phones, the model is different. Dofus Touch is a free download and is funded by optional in-app purchases, including a 30-day bonus pack. Ankama relaunched it on 3 April 2024 with new servers, opened to everyone at the same time.

For anyone after the Dofus experience without a subscription, this is the most direct route today. PvP has its place too: the app listing mentions the 1v1 Kolossium and fights in 1 against 1 or 3 against 3. The limits are those of an MMORPG on a small screen: long sessions, and a progression that takes time.

Wakfu and Waven: the free cousins

Wakfu

Wakfu, Ankama’s tactical MMORPG released in 2012, is listed as “Free To Play” on Steam. A 2023 guide describes a game that is almost entirely accessible without paying, except for the latest zone and Hero mode (playing several characters at once), which require a booster. The booster also gives experience and loot bonuses. Finally, there are convenience purchases and a paid DLC.

It is the free game closest to Dofus: the same world, a thousand years later, with AP, MP and a grid, but with systems of its own (character facing, Wakfu points) that you have to learn again.

Waven

Waven is free, and its team says so plainly on Steam: all the content is accessible without paying. The game has, however, been in early access since August 2023, and it is going through a deep overhaul, with a progression reset planned for version 1.0. Ankama was aiming for December 2025, “or even” 2026; at the time of writing, we have found no confirmation that this 1.0 has been released. Check its status before you invest time in it.

Krosmaga

Ankama’s tactical card game is free, but it is no longer updated and its mobile version has closed. For the curious only.

Free games like Dofus outside Ankama

Many famous tactics games are paid (Divinity: Original Sin 2, XCOM 2, Final Fantasy Tactics). On the free side, the choice is thinner, especially for PvP.

Solwaris: Dofus-style combat, free and in a browser

Solwaris keeps what happens during a fight in Dofus, and removes the rest. It is a turn-based 1v1 tactical duel in 3D that opens in a tab: no download, no sign-up, no subscription.

• 12 AP and 6 MP per turn, never carried over; spells with range, line of sight and cooldown;
• 6 classes and 48 spells, all playable from the start; the Shade traps like a Sram, the Clockmaker steals AP like a Xelor;
• no levels and no gear: there is nothing to farm, so nothing to buy to be competitive;
• ranked leagues with an Elo rating per class, Training against the AI, a spectator mode.

The Shop sells skins, and the Battle Pass has a free track; none of these items change damage, ranges or any rule. The limit lies elsewhere: Solwaris only does combat. No exploration, no quests, no professions. And its community is still small: at off-peak hours the queue can stay empty for a while, and Training against the AI fills the wait.

Advance Wars By Web

For pure grid tactics, this free fan site brings Advance Wars back to life in the browser, with online games for two players or in teams. The world has nothing to do with Dofus, but the turn-based thinking is all there.

Which free game to choose for what you want

• The real Dofus, without a subscription: Dofus Touch on mobile.
• A full, free MMORPG: Wakfu.
• Ankama’s world in a short format: Waven, keeping an eye on its overhaul.
• Just the combat, right now, on any computer: Solwaris.
• Dofus on PC, for the long haul: the subscription, paid in euros or in ogrines.
