Games Like Dofus: 9 Turn-Based Tactics Alternatives in 2026

If you have never heard of Dofus, here is the short version. It is a French MMORPG made by Ankama, a studio based in Roubaix, first released in 2004 and rebuilt on the Unity engine as Dofus 3 in December 2024. It has 19 classes, a colourful isometric world, and above all a turn-based combat system on a grid: every turn you spend action points (AP) on spells and movement points (MP) on tiles, and line of sight decides what you can hit. Placement matters more than gear. That is the part players fall in love with, and it is surprisingly rare elsewhere.

If you already play it, you know why you are here. Maybe you want the Ankama world without the time commitment, maybe a game that is free instead of a subscription, or maybe you only ever cared about the Kolossium, Dofus’s ranked PvP arena, and not the hours of farming around it. This list covers all three.

What makes a game feel like Dofus

Plenty of games have turn-based fights. Few feel like Dofus. The ones on this list share at least two of these four traits:

• A budget per turn, split between action and movement, rather than "one move, one attack".
• A grid where position is everything: line of sight, walls, pushes into obstacles, tiles you must not end your turn on.
• Classes with a strong identity, each bending the rules in its own way (traps, summons, stealing points, teleporting).
• Fights that stay readable: little luck, so a lost fight teaches you something.

What they do not all share is the MMO around the fights: the world, the quests, the professions and the economy. Decide first whether you want that part, because it splits this list in two.

The comparison at a glance

From the same studio: Ankama

Wakfu

The closest relative. Same world, set a thousand years after Dofus, released in 2012. You get the familiar classes, the grid, AP and MP, and combat that leans even harder on positioning and on which way characters face. Wakfu is a full MMORPG, with quests, professions and a player economy. It is the most faithful alternative, and also the most demanding in time. You can start for free, with optional paid extras.

Waven

Waven is Ankama’s attempt to fit its tactical know-how into a shorter, more approachable game. It launched in free early access on Steam in August 2023 and was heavily reworked in 2025. A good pick if you like the world but not the commitment of an MMO. Check its current state before you dive in: the game has been changing fast.

Dofus Touch and Dofus Retro

Not alternatives so much as other ways to play Dofus. Dofus Touch is the mobile version, free with in-app purchases. Dofus Retro brings back version 1.29, the one from the early years, and needs a Dofus subscription. For reference, that subscription has cost €5.99 a month since Dofus 3 launched in December 2024. The price is set in euros, so outside the eurozone the amount you pay depends on the exchange rate on the day.

Solwaris: the Kolossium, without the grind

Solwaris starts from a simple question: what is left of Dofus if you keep only the fights? The answer is a turn-based 1v1 tactical duel that you play directly in the browser. No quests, no gear to farm, no subscription: you pick a class and you fight.

The mechanics will feel familiar to any Dofus player:

• every turn you get 12 AP and 6 MP (the Arcanist has 14 AP, the Shade 7 MP), and whatever you do not spend is lost;
• spells need line of sight, and have a range, a cost and a cooldown;
• you push, pull, swap places and lay invisible traps;
• a turn lasts at most 40 seconds, and a match ends after 40 turns at the latest.

The 6 classes share 48 spells, and a few of them have an obvious family resemblance. The Shade traps and poisons like a Sram, the Clockmaker steals AP and plays with time like a Xelor, the Artificer mines the ground with bombs like a Rogue.

PvP is ranked in leagues, with a separate Elo rating for each class. You can also train against the AI, watch other players’ matches as a spectator, or play 2v2. The game is young and its community is still small: at quiet hours you may wait a while for an opponent, and training against the AI fills the gap.

The big tactics games outside Ankama

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Larian’s RPG (2017) also runs on action points: 4 per turn, up to 6, and the ones you do not use carry over to the next turn. Fights lean heavily on the environment, with surfaces of fire, oil and poison. It is a single-player or co-op game, paid, on PC and consoles.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

The reference grid tactics RPG came back on 30 September 2025 in a reworked version, on PC and consoles. It has a very rich class system (the "jobs"), which you combine to build your characters. No PvP, but a campaign with a reputation that has lasted decades.

XCOM 2

Less close in style, very close in tension: every turn is played on a grid, with cover, hit chances and soldiers you can lose for good. XCOM 2 (Firaxis, 2016) includes an online 1v1 mode, which is rare in the genre.

Into the Breach

Tiny fights on an 8 by 8 grid where you see in advance what the enemy is about to do. Every turn becomes a puzzle of positioning and pushes, exactly the kind of thinking the best Dofus fights demand. Single-player, paid, on PC and Switch; on phones it is part of a Netflix subscription.

Which game to choose, based on what you love in Dofus

• The world and the MMO: Wakfu, without hesitation.
• Something free and less time-consuming: Waven, or Dofus Touch on your phone.
• PvP and nothing else: Solwaris, which does only that, for free, in the browser.
• A big single-player campaign: Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Final Fantasy Tactics.
• Pure thinking in short sessions: Into the Breach.
