Turn-Based Games You Can Play Online Right Now (Free, in a Browser)

Some turn-based games want you for five focused minutes, others for one move a day over a month. Here are the free ones you can open in a browser tab today, sorted by how you actually want to play, and how each of them finds you an opponent.

Search for turn-based games online and you get two kinds of answers: huge portals full of single-player puzzles, and Steam lists of games you have to buy and install. Neither helps if what you want is to play against a person, right now, in the browser you already have open.

This guide is about that. Every game below is free to start, runs in a browser tab, and puts you against real opponents. The real question is not "which game", it is which rhythm: a live match where you both sit down together, or a slow game where each player moves when they have a minute.

Live or asynchronous: the choice that matters most

Every online turn-based game falls on one side of this line.

Live (synchronous): both players are connected for the whole match, and each turn has a clock. A game lasts from a few minutes to an hour. It feels like sitting at a table together.

Asynchronous (correspondence, or "play by turn"): you make your move, the other player is notified, and they answer when they can. Board Game Arena’s own FAQ puts it simply: in turn-based mode, you and your opponents do not need to be online at the same time. Its speed settings range from about ten moves a day down to one move a day, and the site encourages you to run several games at once. Chess.com’s Daily Chess works the same way, with several days per move.

If you want…PickExamples

A game that fits around workAsynchronous, 1v1Chess.com Daily, Advance Wars By Web
A game night with three friendsLive, groupBoard Game Arena, Colonist.io
A long campaign with a groupAsynchronous, groupBoard Game Arena turn-based, Freeciv-web longturn

Neither is better. Live play rewards focus and quick reading of the board; asynchronous play rewards depth, because you can spend twenty minutes on one decision.

Live 1v1: short matches against one opponent

Solwaris

Capture of Solwaris: the screen shown when the queue finds an opponent, with each player’s league.

Solwaris is a turn-based tactical duel played in 3D in the browser, with no download and no sign-up. Two heroes on a tiled arena, and each turn you get 12 action points and 6 movement points to move and cast spells. A turn lasts at most 40 seconds, and a match never goes past 40 turns, so a duel takes a few minutes. There are 6 classes with 48 spells in total, and no gear or levels: two players on the same class start with exactly the same tools.

It is a young game with a small community. Off-peak, the queue can stay empty for a while; the menu shows how many players are online and how many are in a match, and you can train against the AI in the meantime.

Lichess and Chess.com

Chess is the original turn-based game online, and still the easiest to get a match in at any hour. Lichess is completely free, open source and ad-free, run by a non-profit. Chess.com is free with optional paid memberships. Both offer live games from one-minute bullet to long rapid games.

Online-Go.com

Online-Go.com (OGS) is a free, web-based Go server. The British Go Association notes that it supports both real-time games and its original correspondence mode, plus tournaments and ladders. If chess feels too sharp, Go is the other great turn-based duel: simple rules, enormous depth.

Asynchronous 1v1: one move at a time

Chess.com Daily and Lichess correspondence

Both chess sites let you play games with days per move instead of minutes. Chess.com’s help center describes Daily Chess as giving you several days for each move, so games last weeks. It is the gentlest way to start playing seriously: you can think, check your plan, and come back.

Advance Wars By Web

Advance Wars By Web (AWBW) is a free fan-run site, online since 2004, that recreates Nintendo’s Advance Wars wargames in the browser. You command infantry, tanks and artillery on grid maps. Most games are played asynchronously, and the site’s Global League runs ranked asynchronous 1v1 matches in three formats: standard, fog of war and high funds. A newer Live League covers real-time sessions.

Group games: three players and more

Board Game Arena

Board Game Arena hosts hundreds of board games, free to play with an optional premium membership. It offers two ways to play, real-time and turn-based, and many of its games take three to five players. If your friends are not "gamers", this is the easiest place to get them to a table.

Colonist.io and Dominion Online

Colonist.io plays like the Settlers of Catan, in the browser and on mobile. Dominion Online is the official version of the deck-building card game, from 2 to 6 players; its base game is free and expansions are sold by subscription.

Freeciv-web

The browser version of Freeciv, the open-source take on Civilization. On freecivweb.com you can play solo, multiplayer, or in "longturn" games, where each turn lasts a long time and everyone plays at their own pace.

How matchmaking actually works

Knowing how a site pairs players tells you what to expect when you click "Play".

Queue and rating (live games). You join a queue, and the server pairs you with the waiting player whose rating is closest to yours. Lichess uses Glicko-2, and new players start at 1500. Solwaris uses a classic Elo rating, separate for each class, starting at 1000; its queue waits a moment to collect players, then pairs each one with the closest rating. The trade-off is always the same: a wider search finds a match faster, a narrower one finds a fairer match.

Challenges and seeks. Many sites also let you post an open challenge ("anyone for a 10-minute game?") or send one to a friend. This is how most asynchronous games start.

Leagues that create games for you. AWBW’s Global League runs in cycles every few hours and creates new games for you, up to the number you asked for, against opponents of a similar rating. You never wait in a queue: games simply appear.

Seasonal arenas. Board Game Arena’s Arena mode adds seasons of three months on top of its normal rating, with leagues to climb.

Why small games feel empty at night

Matchmaking needs people in the queue at the same moment. A giant like Lichess always has someone; a new game does not. That is why asynchronous play and AI training exist: they let you play when nobody else is around. If you choose a smaller game, check whether it shows how many players are online, and play at peak hours for ranked games.

Which one to open first

  • You have ten minutes, now: a live duel. Solwaris for tactics with classes and spells, Lichess for chess.
  • You want something to check between meetings: Chess.com Daily or Advance Wars By Web.
  • You are three or four: Board Game Arena or Colonist.io.
  • You want a climbing ladder: Lichess, the AWBW Global League, or Solwaris with its Elo per class.

Frequently asked questions

What turn-based games can I play online for free?

Lichess and Chess.com for chess, Online-Go.com for Go, Board Game Arena for hundreds of board games, Advance Wars By Web for wargames, Colonist.io and Dominion Online for board and card games, and Solwaris for 1v1 tactical duels. All of them run in a browser.

What is an asynchronous turn-based game?

A game where players do not need to be online at the same time. You make your move, the other player is notified and answers when they can, sometimes hours or days later. Chess.com Daily, Board Game Arena turn-based mode and Advance Wars By Web all work this way.

How do online turn-based games find an opponent?

Most use a queue and a rating. You join the queue, and the server pairs you with someone whose rating is close to yours. Asynchronous games often use open challenges or a league that creates games for you in cycles instead.

Can I play turn-based games online with friends?

Yes. Board Game Arena, Colonist.io, Lichess and Online-Go.com let you invite a friend to a table or a private game. Board Game Arena is the best choice for groups, since many of its games take three to five players.
